Front-Load Washer Care: How to Stop Mold and Musty Odours Before They Start
Front-load washers are the workhorses of the modern Canadian laundry room: they use up to 50% less water than top-loaders, spin clothes drier so your dryer runs shorter, and stack neatly in condos and closets. But they have one well-known quirk — that airtight door seal that keeps water in during the cycle also traps moisture after it. Left unchecked, that leads to mildew on the gasket and a musty smell that transfers to your clothes.
The good news? Five minutes a week and one short monthly routine will keep your front-loader smelling factory-fresh for its entire life. Here's how.
1. Leave the door (and detergent drawer) open between loads
This is the single biggest habit change. After your last load of the day, leave the door ajar a few inches and slide the detergent drawer open. Air circulation dries out the drum and gasket overnight, and mold simply can't grow on a dry surface. If you have curious toddlers or pets, many newer models have a magnetic "vent" latch that holds the door open just a crack — check your manual.
2. Wipe the door gasket weekly
The grey rubber boot around the door opening has deep folds that collect water, lint, coins, and the occasional sock. Once a week, pull the folds back and wipe them dry with a towel. If you spot dark spots starting to form, wipe with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Catching it early takes 30 seconds; scrubbing established mildew takes a lot longer.
3. Run a monthly tub clean cycle
Most front-loaders built in the last decade have a dedicated Tub Clean, Self Clean, or Sanitize cycle. Run it once a month, empty, with either a washing machine cleaner tablet or a cup of white vinegar. No dedicated cycle? Run the hottest, longest wash setting empty instead. This dissolves the invisible film of detergent residue and body oils that builds up on the drum — the food source mold feeds on.
4. Use less detergent (yes, really)
Most Canadians use two to three times more detergent than needed. Front-loaders use very little water, so excess suds don't rinse away — they coat the drum and gasket and turn into that grey slime you find in neglected machines. Use high-efficiency (HE) detergent only, and start with about half the recommended amount. If your clothes come out clean without a perfume-y residue smell, you've found the right dose. Skip fabric softener where you can; dryer balls do the job without coating your drum.
5. Clean the drain pump filter every few months
Behind the small access panel at the bottom front of most machines lives the drain pump filter — the trap that catches lint, hair, and stray bobby pins. A clogged filter causes slow draining, extra moisture left in the drum, and odours. Place a shallow tray and a towel underneath (some water will escape), unscrew the filter, rinse it under the tap, and screw it back in. It's a five-minute job that also protects your drain pump from expensive damage.
6. Don't let wet laundry sit
Life happens, but try to move loads to the dryer within an hour or two of the cycle ending. Wet clothes sealed in a closed drum are the fastest route to a musty machine — and to rewashing the same load twice.
