What Does "Open-Box" Mean? Appliance Conditions Explained
You've seen the price difference. The same LG washer is $1,200 at a big-box store and $749 marked "open box" at a warehouse store. So what's the catch?
Short answer: usually, there isn't one — if you know what the labels mean and you're buying from a seller who grades honestly. This guide explains exactly what open-box, scratch-and-dent, factory-refurbished and box-packed mean at Oxbury Warehouse, how we test and grade every unit, and which condition makes sense for your situation.
The four conditions, in plain English
Open-box
An open-box appliance is exactly what it sounds like: the box was opened. Maybe a customer ordered it online and returned it unused because it didn't fit. Maybe it was a display unit that was never plugged in. Maybe the packaging was damaged in shipping so the manufacturer can't sell it as new.
The appliance itself has never lived in anyone's kitchen. But once the seal is broken, the law and the manufacturer say it can't be sold as "new" — so the price drops 30–40%, and you collect the difference.
Scratch-and-dent
A scratch-and-dent unit picked up a cosmetic mark somewhere between the factory and the floor — a scuffed side panel, a small dent near the back, a scratch under the handle. The mark is usually somewhere you'll never see once it's installed: the side of a fridge that sits against a cabinet, the back of a washer that faces a wall.
Mechanically, nothing is wrong with it. At Oxbury, we photograph the imperfection and tell you exactly where it is before you buy. If the dent will show in your kitchen, you'll know before checkout — not after delivery.
Factory refurbished
A refurbished appliance came back to the manufacturer or an authorized service centre, was inspected, repaired with proper parts where needed, and tested to perform like new. It's the most thorough check any appliance gets — arguably more thorough than a new unit, which is tested by sampling, not individually.
Refurbished offers the deepest savings, typically 40–45% below big-box pricing. It's the smart-money pick for rental units, basements, cottages and first homes.
New / box-packed
Factory-sealed, never opened. The same unit the big-box store sells — we just sell it for less because a warehouse costs less to run than a showroom. If the appliance is the centrepiece of a renovation and you want zero compromises, this is your lane.
"Is open-box worth it?" — the honest answer
For most buyers, yes — with two conditions:
1. The seller tests and grades honestly. A scratch is fine; a mystery is not. Before you buy open-box anywhere, ask: Has the unit been tested? Where exactly is the cosmetic damage? Can I see photos of the actual unit (not a stock image)? At Oxbury, every unit is tested before it leaves the warehouse, and you can message us on WhatsApp for real-time photos and video of any specific unit.
2. There's a real warranty behind it. This is the big one. Manufacturer warranties often don't transfer to open-box units, which is why some sellers are vague about coverage. Every appliance at Oxbury includes our own warranty — 1 year on open-box, scratch-and-dent and refurbished units, and up to 2 years on new box-packed — handled by our local London team, not a call centre.
Open-box vs. used: not the same thing
"Used" means someone owned it, ran it for years, and is selling it on Kijiji with whatever wear it picked up — no testing, no warranty, no recourse. Open-box, scratch-and-dent and refurbished units have never been someone's appliance. They're graded, tested, warrantied, and delivered. If you've been browsing used appliances to save money, a graded unit with a warranty usually costs only slightly more and removes almost all of the risk.
Which condition is right for you?
| Your situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen renovation, appliance on display | New box-packed | Flawless finish, longest warranty |
| Fridge/washer died, need a replacement this week | Open-box | Near-new at 30–40% off, in stock now |
| Rental property or basement suite | Refurbished | Deepest savings, tested, warrantied |
| Side or back damage won't show in your layout | Scratch-and-dent | Biggest discount on a cosmetically marked unit |
One thing to know: these deals don't restock
A big-box store has fifty of the same fridge in a distribution centre. An open-box unit is one of one — when it sells, it's gone. That's why smart buyers in London check our open-box collection regularly, and why it pays to act when you see the model you've been pricing.
FAQ
Does open-box mean used?
No. Open-box units were returned unused, displayed, or repackaged — never installed in a home. Used appliances have years of wear and no warranty.
Do open-box appliances come with a warranty?
At Oxbury, yes — every open-box, scratch-and-dent and refurbished unit includes a 1-year Oxbury warranty. New box-packed units carry up to 2 years.
How much can I save on open-box appliances?
Typically 30–40% below big-box retail for open-box and scratch-and-dent, and 40–45% on factory-refurbished units.
Can I see the actual unit before buying?
Yes. Visit our London showroom, or message us on WhatsApp for real-time photos and video of the exact unit.
