Open Box, Scratch & Dent, or Factory Refurbished? A Plain-English Guide to Buying Discount Appliances in Canada
If you've spent any time browsing appliance deals, you've seen the labels: New Box, Open Box – Scratch & Dent, and Factory Refurbished. They all promise savings off the big-box price, but they don't mean the same thing — and knowing the difference can save you from a surprise (or help you save even more).
Here's a plain-English breakdown of what you're actually buying at each grade, straight from how we grade every unit that comes through our Ontario warehouse.
New Box
This is exactly what it sounds like: a brand-new appliance in its original, unopened manufacturer packaging. It's never been installed, plugged in, or used. The only reason it's priced below big-box retail is that we buy in volume directly from manufacturers and distributors and pass the savings on — not because anything is wrong with it. It carries the full manufacturer warranty, same as if you bought it from any major retailer.
Best for: anyone who wants a zero-compromise, fully warrantied appliance for meaningfully less money.
Open Box – Scratch & Dent
These units are new and typically unused, but the packaging or the appliance itself picked up cosmetic damage somewhere along the way — a dent from a forklift, a scuff from shipping, a scratch on a side panel you'll never see once it's installed. The appliance is mechanically sound and functions exactly like a brand-new one; the imperfection is cosmetic only, and every unit is inspected before it's listed.
This category also includes true open-box units: items a customer ordered, opened, and returned before ever using, or floor models retailers no longer need. These are the deepest discounts in our catalog, often 20-25% below new-box pricing.
Best for: budget-conscious buyers who don't mind a small cosmetic mark on a side or back panel that faces the wall anyway — this is where the smartest savings usually are.
Factory Refurbished
These are units that were returned, had a minor issue, or didn't pass an initial inspection — then went through a full refurbishment process: tested, repaired by qualified technicians, cleaned, and re-inspected before being cleared for resale. Because more work goes into preparing them, they typically sell for less than open-box units but come with the added confidence of a documented repair and inspection process.
Best for: buyers who want the lowest possible price and are comfortable with a unit that's had a hands-on repair and quality check rather than being untouched since the factory.
So which grade should you buy?
There's no universally "right" answer — it depends on where the appliance is going and how much of a deal you're chasing:
- Prime spot in your kitchen, want zero cosmetic flaws? New Box.
- Appliance will sit against a wall or in a garage/basement, and you want the biggest discount for the least compromise? Open Box – Scratch & Dent.
- Maximum savings and comfortable with a professionally repaired and re-tested unit? Factory Refurbished.
A note on warranty and returns
Every appliance we sell, regardless of grade, is inspected before it ships and backed by our return policy. Refurbished units go through documented testing so you know exactly what was fixed. If you're ever unsure which grade fits your situation, our team is happy to walk you through the specifics of a particular model before you buy.
The bottom line: "discount" doesn't have to mean "risky." Once you know what each grade actually means, you can pick the one that matches your budget and your tolerance for a cosmetic mark — and walk away with real savings either way.
