Why Your Front-Load Washer Smells — and How to Fix It for Good
If you've ever opened your front-load washer and been hit with a musty, mildewy smell — you're not alone. It's one of the most common complaints Canadian homeowners have about high-efficiency (HE) front-load machines. The good news? That odour isn't a sign your washer is broken. It's almost always the result of trapped moisture and residue, and it's completely fixable with a few minutes of regular upkeep.
Why front-load washers smell in the first place
Front-load washers are fantastic at what they do. They use far less water and energy than top-load machines, spin faster to pull more water out of your clothes (which cuts your dryer time and hydro bill), and they're gentler on fabrics. But that efficient, tightly sealed design has one trade-off: the rubber door gasket and detergent drawer create pockets where water, lint, and soap residue can linger between washes.
Add in three common habits and you've got the perfect recipe for odour:
- Too much detergent. HE machines need only a fraction of what older washers used. Excess suds don't rinse away — they build up inside the drum and gasket, feeding mildew.
- Washing in cold water only. Cold cycles save energy, but never running a warm or hot cycle lets a biofilm develop over time.
- Leaving the door closed. A sealed, damp drum with no airflow is exactly where mould loves to grow.
How to get rid of the smell right now
If your machine already smells, here's how to reset it:
- Clean the rubber gasket. Peel back the folds of the door seal and wipe them with a cloth dipped in a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and warm water (or a diluted bleach solution). This is where the worst of the gunk hides — you may be surprised what you find.
- Run a hot cleaning cycle. Use your washer's "Tub Clean" or "Self Clean" setting if it has one. If not, run an empty cycle on the hottest setting with two cups of white vinegar, or a washing-machine cleaning tablet.
- Wipe out the detergent drawer. Pull it all the way out, rinse it in the sink, and scrub away any slimy buildup before sliding it back in.
- Dry everything down. Towel-dry the gasket, glass, and drawer, then leave the door open for a few hours to fully air out.
The 5-minute routine that keeps it from coming back
Prevention is much easier than a deep clean. Build these habits and the smell won't return:
- Leave the door and drawer open between loads so the drum can dry out.
- Measure your detergent — use an HE-rated formula and stick to the line marked on the cap. Less really is more.
- Wipe the gasket dry after your last load of the day, and remove any coins, hair pins, or lint you find in the folds.
- Run a tub-clean cycle monthly. Put a reminder in your phone — it takes minutes and adds years to the life of your machine.
- Move damp laundry to the dryer promptly instead of letting it sit in the drum.
Keeping your washer clean does more than solve the smell. A residue-free drum and gasket rinse your clothes more effectively, help the machine run efficiently, and prevent premature wear on the seals — which means fewer repairs down the road.
When it's time for an upgrade
Sometimes a persistent problem — a torn gasket, a failing pump, or a machine that's simply past its prime — means it's smarter to replace than repair. If that's where you're at, you don't have to pay full big-box prices for a quality front-load washer.
At Oxbury Appliances, we carry New Box, Open Box (Scratch & Dent), and Factory Refurbished front-load washers from the brands you trust — often at 20% to 50% below what the big-box stores charge for the same model. Open-box and refurbished units are fully functional; they simply may have a minor cosmetic mark or came back as an unused return, and every one is priced to save you real money.
